TORONTO—Facing tough times, Microcell Telecommunications has laid off 5 percent of its work force. The Montreal-based carrier of the Fido brand wireless service gave the pink slip to about 200 employees.
The job cuts consist of 90 positions in Montreal, 35 in Toronto and eight in Vancouver, with about 70 more jobs eliminated at subsidiary Microcell Incorporated in Montreal. Before the layoffs, the company employed about 4,000 workers.
Still, the carrier is expecting an increase in business, given it is the first off the mark in Canada with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) offerings. Microcell launched its national GPRS packet data service in October.
