Portugal delays 3G start date

LISBON, Portugal—The Portugal government has delayed the date by which operators must launch commercial third-generation (3G) mobile services in Portugal until 31 December, 2002. In addition, operators are exempt from taxes for spectrum use during 2002.

The government said it made the decision after consultations with the country’s four mobile operators and equipment manufacturers. The government cited a lack of available equipment as the major reason for the date change.
