BEIJING—Qu Weizhi, a vice minister of China’s Ministry of Information Industry, told a World Economic Forum meeting in Hong Kong that there is no decision yet on when to issue new mobile licenses in addition to the existing ones held by China Mobile and China Unicom.
Much will depend on market demand for 2.5-generation (2.5G) and third-generation (3G) services. If the two mobile carriers can meet demand, the issuance of licenses to other carriers may be postponed. Some analysts expect China to issue one or more mobile licenses in 2002. China has not yet issued 3G licenses.
