Siemens, CATT to continue TD-SCDMA development

BEIJING—Siemens and the China Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT) signed an agreement during German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s visit to Beijing this week. It is one of 29 agreements signed between Chinese and German companies.
Siemens and CATT agree to continue their existing cooperation on TD-SCDMA technology for a further three years. An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement allows both to independently produce and market TD-SCDMA-based products.

The initial agreement was signed in August 1999. CATT is a subsidiary of Datang Telecom Technology, which has so far invested 400 million yuan (US$48.39 million) in the development of the TD-SCDMA standard and equipment and pledged to invest a further 200 million yuan (US$24.19 million).

At the Sino-German High Tech Forum 2001 in Beijing, Siemens and CATT announced the successful start-up of the first TD-SCDMA test network.

TD-SCDMA is China’s own standard for third-generation (3G) mobile communications and has been adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
