Toshiba launches CDMA handset joint venture in China

BEIJING—Japan’s Toshiba is setting up a CDMA handset joint venture in China, together with the Nanjing Postel Telecommunication Company and Hong Kong’s Wong’s International (Holdings). The venture is to be based in Nanjing and would start production next year.

Nanjing Postel is one of 19 companies granted CDMA handset production licenses by China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) in August. The only foreign company on the list is Motorola. All other foreign suppliers are therefore obliged to team up with a Chinese license holder.

Toshiba President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tadashi Okamura declined to divulge the production capacity and registered capital of the venture. Many details of the project still need to be worked out.
