TOKYO—German vendor Siemens said in a statement that it has agreed to merge its operations with Toshiba’s cell-phone unit.
Both companies will combine their research and development expertise and resources for third-generation (3G) phones, especially for wideband CDMA technology.
“By allowing us to integrate the latest advances in W-CDMA and GSM into our products, the global alliance will put us in a position to respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of the 3G mobile-phone market,” said Kaoru Kubo, executive vice president of Toshiba’s Digital Media Network company.
