MANCHESTER, N.H.-Transcept Inc. launched OpenCell, a multitenant, multifrequency and multiprotocol system that can simultaneously host up to eight wireless service provider tenants, each functioning independently.
“This new system offers tower aggregators a new avenue for growth, in terms of more sites and more tenants,” said Mark Wilson, president and chief executive officer of Transcept.
OpenCell is a radio-frequency distribution system with a microcell coverage architecture. Its hardware components consist of a network of remote transceivers, called Radio Access Nodes, each with a multiband antenna. This equipment is installed throughout a targeted community on existing low-level elevated structures like utility poles.
RANs are interconnected via digital fiber links to a centrally located OpenCell hub, which provides connectivity to each tenant’s base station electronics.
“The system is complementary to existing tower systems, offers access to new real estate and enables a transition toward a turnkey wireless infrastructure,” said Robert Polychron, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Transcept.
Transcept said it has scheduled initial field deployments to begin in the first quarter of next year.
