Patent suit filed against RIM

WATERLOO, Canada—A curious patent infringement suit has been filed against Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the popular BlackBerry wireless e-mail device.

RIM said it learned of the complaint filed by NTP Inc., a Virginia-based holding company. RIM said it initially became aware of NTP after receiving a letter in January from the company expressing interest in licensing RIM’s patents.

“RIM promptly responded to NTP with a request for documentation that would explain the applicability of NTP’s patents to RIM’s products,” RIM said in a statement. “NTP failed to respond to RIM’s request or communicate any further with RIM until the complaint was received.”

RIM said it believes the complaint is unsubstantiated, and that it would file its legal response in due course.
