CAMBRIDGE, U.K.—Antenova and ip.access have announced a partnership to develop directional antennas for GSM picobasestations, small, easy-to-install base stations that can complete network coverage, extend capacity, and support enterprises using wireless technology.
Antenova will provide the directional antenna technology and ip.access will target the basestations at mobile users inside buildings and in crowded urban environments—a plan that the companies believe will prohibit interference between local in-building systems and the external macro GSM network.
“Smart antennas are going to be an important driver for the wireless industry,” said Graham Cooley, chief executive officer of Antenova. “We expect this project to demonstrate one of their many benefits—directionality—in a product area which will be influential for progress in mobile networks as a whole.”
