Fujitsu, licenses Symbian OS

TOKYO—Fujitsu Ltd. licensed Symbian’s operating system for use in the company’s third-generation mobile phones, further adding to the long list of Symbian licensees.

Fujitsu joins Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Kenwood, Panasonic and a variety of other manufacturers that have licensed Symbian’s platform. Symbian has been battling with Microsoft, Palm and manufacturers’ proprietary operating systems for control of the market. Symbian’s licensees control more than 70 percent of the mobile phone market, and analysts have said the company will likely have the most influence over the smart-phone market.
