Fujitsu to use Symbian OS for 3G phones

TOKYO—Fujitsu signed a licensing agreement with Symbian that will see all Fujitsu third-generation (3G) phones based on the Symbian operating system (OS), adding to Symbian’s long list of licensees.

Other Japanese manufacturers that have licensed the Symbian OS include Kenwood, Panasonic, Sanyo and Sony.

“Symbian OS has already been licensed to mobile-phone manufacturers representing over 70 percent of the mobile-phone market,” said Hiromi Nishi, president of Symbian, Japan. “We are pleased to welcome Fujitsu Ltd. to the growing Symbian community, which is helping to establish Symbian OS as the standard operating system for advanced mobile phones.”

Symbian has been battling with Microsoft, Palm and manufacturers’ proprietary operating systems for control of the market. Analysts have said the company will likely have the most influence over the smart-phone market.
