Polish carrier implements location services

MUNICH, Germany—Polish mobile operator PTC-Era has chosen a location-based services platform from Siemens and SignalSoft for delivery via Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and short message service (SMS). PTC-Era is the first Eastern European operator to invest in location-based services for its subscribers, according to a Siemens statement.

The recently signed contract covers Siemens’ deployment of SignalSoft’s Location Manager gateway as part of the Siemens Location Platform. The gateway manages location data from any type of location technology and links the information with a variety of location-based applications.

The deployment follows a six-month trial.

PTC-Era, owned by Polish company Elektrim Telekomunikacja and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, is Poland’s largest mobile operator with 3.5 million subscribers.
