South African operator Cell C enters price battle

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Cell C, the third South African mobile network operator, announced its postpaid offerings and tariffs 15 days after going live with its prepaid products. Since 17 November, the network claims to have received more than 400,000 orders for prepaid starter packs with 240,000 delivered to the outlets and more than 100,000 active users on the network.

The four postpaid products, Club Chat, Casual Chat, Active Chat and Business Chat, are said to be able to offer subscribers choice in terms of contract length and a 10-percent discount for calls to four predetermined numbers. Subscribers will also be able to gain discounts on international calls, while per-second billing is a standard feature on all offerings.

In addition, Cell C said it would be able to take advantage of the new interconnect agreement with fixed-line network operator Telkom and offer a 9-percent discount for all calls from a fixed line to a Cell C number. Telkom charges to incumbent networks MTN and Vodacom are billed at 1.78 rand (US$0.16) per minute, while those dialed to Cell C numbers would be charged at 1.62 rand (US$0.15) per minute.

Cell C’s chief strategist, Paul Doany, said the new tariffs and postpaid packages will enable the carrier to effectively target large corporate customers.
