House members introduce NextWave settlement legislation

WASHINGTON—House of Representatives members Billy Tauzin, Bill Thomas, James Sensebrenner and John Conyers introduced legislation on Thursday to write into law a settlement between the government and NextWave Telecom Inc. concerning the ownership of NextWave’s wireless licenses.

The legislation calls for NextWave to give up its claim to the licenses in return for nearly $6 billion. The money would come from wireless operators who bid nearly $16 billion for the licenses during a Federal Communications Commission auction earlier this year.

The settlement, which is required to be passed by Congress by the end of the year, is necessary to protect against continued legal challenges.
