Qualcomm buys stake in Indian wireless venture

NEW DELHI, India—The U.S.-based CDMA developer Qualcomm finalized a deal with Mumbai-based Reliance Group to buy a minority stake in its basic service operations based on wireless technology.

Reliance Group company, RCL, has been licensed to provide basic telephony services in 17 telecom circles and is planning to roll out services using CDMA. Basic operators are allowed to operate fixed wireless, as well as “limited mobility” services using wireless local loop (WLL) technology.

Qualcomm is picking up a 3-percent stake, valued at US$200 million, in RCL. The company will supply CDMA infrastructure as well as handsets.
