TOKYO—Showa Denko K.K., a leading electronics device maker, in cooperation with NHK, a Japanese public broadcasting company, jointly developed new materials for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices, Showa Denko announced.
The organic EL technology is winning much attention in the market as a next-generation display material. Many leading electronic manufacturers are gearing up their efforts to develop organic EL, targeting to launch mass production by the end of this year at the earliest.
According to Showa Denko, the new material—a new type of phosphorescent polymer—will increase the efficiency of emission of lights in three primary colors, red, green and blue, from the conventional 5 percent to 20 percent.
The firm also said that because the new materials require a simpler manufacturing process, the production costs for organic EL will be reduced.
The market for organic EL devices is expected to be 200 billion yen (US$1.5 billion) in 2005.
