Smartcom PCS launches 2.5G service in Chile

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina—Cellular operator Smartcom PCS has launched its 2.5-generation (2.5G) service in the city of Santiago de Chile using 1XRTT technology.

Thus, Smartcom PCS follows the path initiated by Entel PCS, which launched its 2.5G network over GSM/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology last November. Smartcom PCS’ network was provided by Nortel Networks and is designed to offer data transmission speeds of up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps).

The Smartcom PCS network launch forms part of a two-year US$65 million agreement with Nortel Networks.

“The 1XRTT solution has provided us with one of the most advanced wireless infrastructures in Latin America. It allows our clients to take advantage of the latest voice and data wireless services available today,” said Jaime Gross, Smartcom PCS general manager.

Likewise, Alvio Barrios, director of Nortel Networks for Latin America, said the company worked “closely with Smartcom PCS in developing its network to satisfy the needs of the new generation of wireless users in Chile, one of the most competitive markets in South America.”

Smartcom PCS was acquired by Endesa Espa
