Australian service provider looks to exit South African mobile arena

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Cellular service provider B Clear, a subsidiary of Australian company B Digital, has reported that it may leave the South African mobile market.

The company recently announced it had sold 40,000 subscribers to M-Tel, the service provider company of South African mobile network operator MTN.

“To ensure uninterrupted cellular service, our subscribers were automatically transferred to M-Tel when our relationship with B Clear ended,” said Yvonne Muthien, MTN’s group executive of corporate affairs.

Both MTN and B Clear have stated that due to confidentiality agreements in place they are unable to divulge any further details on the transaction.

B Clear has been left with an estimated 10,000 subscribers using the Vodacom network, which may be sold to Vodac, a service provider company owned by Vodacom.

An executive of B Clear South Africa said the company is in the process of assessing its position in the local market and will either leave altogether or begin the task of rebuilding its subscriber base.
