LONDON—The Malaysian government is set to issue tender documents for third-generation (3G) license applicants. The three licenses that are due to be awarded will be based on wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) technology.
The licenses, which are expected to be handed out by mid-2002, will consist of a block of paired 15-megahertz spectrum and will be valid for 15 years. 3G services are not expected to be launched in Malaysia before the end of 2003.
Previous press reports had said the government had already decided to award 3G licenses to incumbent operators Telekom Malaysia, DiGi.com and Maxis Communications. The government has denied the reports.
