NEW YORK—Millicom International Cellular S.A. has been awarded a nationwide GSM license in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos).
MIC will work with the Committee for Investment and Co-operation, the government investment licensing agency of Laos, to develop services to run on GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks.
“The award of this license in the Lao PDR is consistent with our strategy of gaining entry to countries at an early stage in their development of telecoms infrastructure,” said Marc Beuls, MIC’s president and chief executive officer.
MIC currently has operations in Vietnam and Cambodia. The company expects to begin operations in Laos in the second half of 2002.
