TOKYO—NEC, a leading telecom vender in Japan, started a sample shipment of a 64-Megabit Random Access Memory (RAM) device for cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). NEC has been providing a 32-Megabit RAM for cellular phones and PDAs.
To meet the new demand for more memory, partly due to new motion picture services being provided by mobile carriers in Japan, NEC has developed what it called the world’s fastest 64-Megabit RAM for mobile handsets.
According to NEC, the new RAM has achieved 65 nanosecond address access time and has a standby power circuitry of 60 microamps. The price for the sampling shipment is 3,000 yen (US$22.40) per unit. NEC is going to start volume production of 500,000 units per month for the product in May 2002 at the earliest.
