Foreign handsets still favorites in China

BEIJING—Based on responses from 243,260 people across China, the China Telecommunications Association and Englewings Public Relations Corporation said Motorola was voted China’s most favored mobile-phone company.

Nearly 84 percent of respondents said they would buy only a foreign-branded phone. Domestic companies are trying to grab market share, but are facing an uphill battle.

A director of the State General Administration for Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine urged more than 40 Chinese mobile-phone manufacturers to unite and stop fierce competition. He also said they should increase their investment in research and development (R&D) and master the core technologies used in handset production.
