JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Mobile operator MTN Nigeria has reported that it will assist the city of Lagos, Nigeria, recover from an explosion at an arms dump, which led to the death of hundreds of people.
It is estimated that 700 people have died in the stampede caused by the explosions.
The operator said it supplied 150 mobile phones to relief workers to help coordinate efforts. The network has also established a toll-free center to update people on relief efforts and trace relatives or friends, with counselors standing by to help callers in emotional distress.
MTN’s Rwanda operation, MTN RwandaCell, announced the company will supply funds for a new road to a water storage facility.
