U.S. Cellular collects used wireless phones to benefit Sept. 11 victims

CHICAGO—Until March 31, U.S. Cellular Corp. said it will be collecting used wireless phones through its Community Action Recycling Effort program with proceeds from the donations benefiting the Families Scholarship Fund, which was established to provide educational assistance for post-secondary study to financially needy dependents of those killed or permanently disabled in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“With more than 30 million used wireless phones lying idle in American homes and businesses, this is an opportunity for our customers to help support an organization that promotes life-long learning, as well as help those trying to recover from the events on that terrible day,” said John Rooney, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Cellular.

The carrier is accepting any portable cellular or digital phone working or not, excluding bad phones or vehicle-installed models. The program has been launched in conjunction with the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association Wireless Foundation and ReCellular Inc., a re-manufacturer of wireless equipment.

Donations will be accepted at U.S. Cellular retail outlets, authorized agent locations or at its corporate headquarters.
