MANILA, The Philippines—Filipinos prefer to use text messages on their mobile phones more frequently than e-mail to stay in touch with each other, according to a recent study conducted by German mobile-phone company Siemens.
In the Siemens Mobile Lifestyle Survey, Filipinos were the heaviest users of short message service (SMS) or text messaging among their Asian neighbors.
Conducted by independent research firm Asia Market Intelligence, the survey involved 3,000 respondents from different countries, including Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, India and Vietnam.
The survey zeroed in on three groups—youth (16 to 24 years old), couples (18 to 54 years old) and office workers (18 to 54 years old).
Based on the study, Filipino respondents use their mobile phones as work-related tools fairly often. More men admitted to using mobile phones at work, while only a few women use mobile phones for business purposes.
The Philippines is regarded as the world’s texting capital, with more than 1 million messages per day pumped through the country’s two local mobile-phone operators, Globe Telecommunications and Smart Communications.
