STOCKHOLM, Sweden—A new Swedish company announced its formation to vie for the fourth GSM license that Sweden’s telecom regulator PTS plans to award by mid-2002. Edge Mobile said it will use GSM, Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) and wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies focused on cities in Sweden to compete in the country’s highly competitive mobile market.
The company, which consists of former Ericsson, Telenordia and Sense executives, will also rely on a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) model and a carrier’s carrier approach. “Independent service developers will be able to develop new services based on Edge network data without excessive costs,” the company said in a statement.
Edge Mobile said it will use WLAN technology with open IP zones for broadband mobile Internet access. The company said it will open its network architecture and content to MVNOs like Virgin Mobile, Glocalnet and Sense, in addition to development companies.
The company said it is close to deals with funding partners, service providers and other companies and will disclose details before the Sweden GSM license application deadline of 27 March.
