Six companies join Symbian semiconductor program

LONDON—Symbian announced six semiconductor companies have joined its Semiconductor Partner Programme, showing support for Symbian OS and ARM core-based chipsets.

The six new partners—Agilent Technologies; Epson; Parthus; Philips Semiconductors; Samsung and STMicroelectronics—join existing partners ARM; Intel; Motorola SPS; Qualcomm CDMA Technologies and Texas Instruments. Symbian said it will work with new partners to migrate Symbian OS to their ARM core-based silicon solutions and the partners in turn will provide development tools and support packages for the development of Symbian OS phones.

In addition, at this week’s 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, Symbian announced UIQ, a new Symbian OS application that provides a user interface for small pen-based phones.

“UIQ brings with it a richer multimedia environment and more intuitive interactivity that will change the way people look at their personal communication devices,” said Johan Sandberg, general manager for Symbian AB.
