After announcing an aggressive business strategy at last year’s GSM Congress, Qualcomm would appear to have backtracked to something more achievable.
The company’s prior plans entailed persuading European GSM operators to consider Qualcomm’s cdma2000 technology over UMTS, thought by many at the time to be highly questionable. After appearing to have made little progress with this objective, the company is now proposing the use of its chipsets for both cdma2000 and UMTS handsets, and letting the customer decide which is best.
The company is keen to demonstrate its track record in the Asia/Pacific region, in particular Korea, where its third-generation technology is being used by up to 5 million subscribers to access high-speed data services.
