REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.—The market for wireless enterprise services continues to heat up today, with several companies positioning themselves to give mobile workers access to corporate information.
The most notable announcement came from software giant Oracle Corp. and Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo. The two companies said they would work together to develop mobile enterprise products to take advantage of DoCoMo’s third-generation FOMA network and Oracle’s range of software products, including the Oracle9i Database, Application Server and E-Business Suite. Other carriers across the globe, as well as other major software companies, are taking similar steps in an effort to tap the corporate wireless market.
Other business-related announcements came from ViaFone and Compaq Computer Corp.
Mobile application company ViaFone today unveiled its OneBridge Mobile Professional product, which the company said gives corporate employees real-time access to business information. The product, based on technology the company gained through its acquisition of MobileQ Inc. last year, includes synchronized access to Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes.
Not to be left out, Compaq released its Wireless Enterprise Framework product, which the company said is a wireless application gateway for integrating multiple enterprise applications, from calendar and contacts to sales force automation programs. Compaq is also hoping to attract reluctant customers through its new pilot program that includes server hardware, software and devices. The entire system can cost less than $300,000 and be installed in four weeks, the company said.
