RF health registry launches next week

WASHINGTON—Dr. George Carlo, the epidemiologist who caused an uproar two years ago after publicizing findings of genetic damage from low-level radio-frequency radiation, is launching a Web-based registry next week that will collect health complaints from mobile phone users and analyze them to detect any patterns of a possible public health risk to the nation’s 130 million subscribers.
The registry’s official debut coincides with the opening of the cell phone industry’s annual conference in Orlando next Monday, and comes at a time of a resurgence in cancer lawsuits targeting wireless firms, trade associations and industry standards bodies.
“We’re now headed for unprecedented use of wireless technology … The registry is the most important public health measure to be implementing right now,” said Carlo.
Industry has questioned the scientific value of data from registries and Carlo’s motives.
