AT&T Wireless enhances capacity, unveils phone, signs FedEx deal

ORLANDO—AT&T Wireless made several announcements to bolster its presence at CTIA Wireless 2002.

The carrier announced it will install Adaptive Multirate Vocorder (AMR) technology that could more than double the voice capacity on its GSM network. In addition, AT&T Wireless said it will begin selling handsets that incorporate the AMR technology later this year.

The company unveiled a TDMA/GSM/GPRS phone, showcasing international roaming services. Siemens will become the first company to deliver the phone, which should be available next month in AT&T Wireless GSM/GPRS network markets for $199.99.

Finally, the company said FedEx Express signed a five-year contract to integrate its private wireless network with AT&T Wireless’ GPRS network, allowing FedEX couriers to access shipping information online, from anywhere the AT&T Wireless GPRS network is deployed.
