VeriSign outlines telecom strategy, announces partnerships

ORLANDO—VeriSign was busy at CTIA Wireless 2002, making five announcements plugging new partnerships and services.

First, VeriSign outlined its telecommunications strategy, since its acquisition of Illuminet Holdings Inc. and H.O. Systems Inc., for delivering services that carriers can use to expand their data and voice offerings. The company said it will focus on providing solutions to carriers in three areas: network services; data services; and mediation and billing services.

VeriSign then announced that Sprint PCS will deploy its wholly owned subsidiary Illuminet’s inter-carrier text messaging solution, Metcalf Global Messaging, which was developed jointly with MobileSpring.

VeriSign’s H.O. Systems unveiled inifini-G, a new suite of billing and mediation services for wireless carriers.

“Infini-G offers carrier a system capable of quickly adapting to changing market conditions and positions VeriSign and H.O. Systems to lead the industry’s transition to converged voice and data solutions,” said Hart Williford, president of H.O. Systems.

VeriSign also announced it will team with Openwave Systems to drive adoption of advanced messaging services. The company will host Openwave’s SMS-enabled Mobile Instant Messaging solution for carriers as a service bureau offering and will work with Openwave to provide mutual customers with an inter-carrier messaging solution.

Finally, VeriSign joined with Cellmania to launch WebNum Integrated Search & Directory Service (WISD).

“When individuals can easily find the sites they seek, the wireless Web becomes much more attractive, and much more traveled,” explained Tim Griswold, managing director of wireless solutions for VeriSign.
