JAKARTA, Indonesia—Vodafone New Zealand recently announced the purchase of management rights for 5 megahertz of third-generation (3G) spectrum from TelstraClear.
TelstraClear, the new name after a merger between TelstraSaturn, a subsidiary of Australia’s Telstra and Clear Communications in December 2001, completed the deal with Vodafone because the new company counted 20 megahertz of combined spectrum, which exceeded the country’s legally allowable amount of spectrum.
Commenting on the purchase, Vodafone’s Managing Director Tim Miles said: “The extra spectrum will be increasingly important as Vodafone moves into 3G applications over the coming years and represents the company’s ongoing commitment to the New Zealand market.”
In addition, Rosemary Howard, TelstraClear’s chief executive, added that the deal is a good example of the two companies working together to benefit customers. The deal leaves TelstraClear with 15 megahertz of 3G spectrum.
