TOKYO—Japan’s NTT DoCoMo is considering withdrawing from the PHS and beeper businesses, Keiji Tachikawa, president of NTT DoCoMo, said on Thursday.
As the leading mobile carrier in Japan, NTT DoCoMo has a variety of mobile businesses. However, because the mobile market in Japan is becoming saturated and cannot expect further rapid expansion, the carrier decided to concentrate its resources on its profitable businesses. NTT DoCoMo is expected to post a loss for fiscal year (FY) 2001, which will end at the end of March 2002, for the first time since it was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998 (see related news under Asia News).
At the Thursday press conference, Tachikawa also said his firm will promote group management strategies, revise its business process and review management strategies aimed at improving its business efficiency.
In the press conference, Tachikawa said he expects the rate for new mobile service subscribers in Japan in FY 2001 will drop by 30 percent compared with the previous year.
