TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo Inc. said has begun to concentrate on profits instead of sales following reports the wireless company will fall short of its originally forecasted subscribers additions to its recently introduced third-generation FOMA service.
While still the dominate wireless provider in Japan, DoCoMo reported signing up approximately 89,000 users to its W-CDMA-based FOMA service by the end of last year, well below previous predictions of 150,000 subscribers. The company reiterated plans to have 6 million FOMA subscribers by next March.
Analysts noted the carrier failed to meet projections due to its limited service area, high-cost of handsets and service, and less-than-expected data speeds.
DoCoMo also announced it had reached an agreement with Oriental Land Company Ltd., operator of Tokyo Disneyland, to sponsor the “Disney on Parade: 100 Years of Magic” beginning April 12. DoCoMo has been the official sponsor of DisneySea Symphony, a nightly entertainment show at Tokyo DisneySea adjacent to Tokyo Disneyland, since last September.
