WASHINGTON—The Grayson Wireless Geometrix Location System for GSM systems meets the enhanced 911 Phase II mandate, confirmed the National Emergency Number Association.
Grayson, a division of Allen Telecom Inc., made the GSM Geometrix software available to NENA in February and NENA conducted more than 9,000 test calls over a GSM network from more than 50 locations.
The Geometrix system accommodates GSM frequency hopping and encryption modes, which are two differences from other digital interfaces, said Grayson.
The fact that the major GSM carriers have chosen to go with enhanced observed time difference does not concern network-solution provider Grayson, said George Marble, Grayson’s vice president of marketing. “E-OTD is not a proven solution that is available. Our solution is both proven and available,” said Marble.
While Marble said Grayson believes the potential market for its Geometrix system is any GSM carrier, he said a number of smaller carriers with TDMA and/or analog systems in place have not announced how they plan to upgrade.
“Any of those carriers that put in our system today with their current technology can be assured they will be able to implement a software upgrade when they implement either GSM or CDMA,” Marble said.
In other news, Advantage Cellular has agreed to purchase Grayson’s Geometrix Wireless Location System to comply with the enhanced 911 mandate, said Grayson, on Friday.
Grayson will be the exclusive supplier to Advantage Cellular, which operates a TDMA network in Tennessee.
