TOKYO—Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, a joint venture of Sony and Ericsson, is going to set up a subsidiary in China for producing third-generation (3G) handsets, Nikkei Shimbun reported on 8 April. Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications was established by the two firms in October 2001 for developing, manufacturing and selling mobile handsets.
According to the paper, the joint venture will set up a subsidiary that will manufacture 3G handsets in Beijing by the end of May at the earliest. At the same time, Sony and Ericsson are, according to Nikkei, going to integrate their handset manufacturing plants in China. Sony has a factory in Beijing, and Ericsson has plans in Beijing and Nanking.
