Tellabs earnings drop 96%, 1,200 jobs cut

NAPERVILLE, Ill.—Telecom equipment maker Tellabs Inc. said it will cut 1,200 jobs as it announced first-quarter earnings of $5.3 million in contrast with $122.5 million a year ago, representing a 96-percent drop.

The company, which said it would record a second-quarter restructuring charge, intends to close a manufacturing plant in Ronkonkoma, N.Y.
