BUENOS AIRES, Argentina—BellSouth doubled the quantity of users during the last six months in Ecuador, which caused a 40-percent increase in phone traffic and the saturation of its network. Consequently, the company decided to suspend the incorporation of new users and destined US$18 million to the expansion of its network infrastructure.
The plan is to install 30 new radio base stations and increase the network capacity by 40 percent before the end of this year. Questioning by the Telecommunications Superintendent regarding the quality of service the company provides in the cities of Quito, Ambato and Riobamba motivated BellSouth to bring forward and increase the investments planned for the current year. Dagmar Thiel, spokesman for the company, said this decision “will eliminate inconveniences and allow us to receive more clients.”
BellSouth has 412,000 subscribers in Ecuador, 72 percent of which prepay for services. Porta, majority owned by Am
