Econet secures international traffic with satellite services

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Zimbabwean-based telecommunications company Econet Wireless announced it has secured contracts valued at an estimated US$50 million to deliver international carrier and satellite services to customers during the next five years.

The contracts will fall under the London-based subsidiary Econet Satellite Services.

Jose Gaie, senior manager at Econet Satellite Services, said international operators had already exhibited interest in signing contracts with the company, adding that Econet would continue to develop a satellite infrastructure between Africa and Europe.

Gaie said the company’s strategy is to increase its share of international traffic to and from Africa, while allowing Econet to gain a European footprint in operating a satellite gateway in the United Kingdom.
