ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—A second Russian carrier was licensed by the Communications Ministry to build a commercial CDMA network based on the International Mobile Telecommunications–Multi Carrier (IMT-MC) standard.
St. Petersburg-based Delta Telecom, an NMT 450 MHz carrier, said it completed test trials of the cdma2000 network and received a license to operate in five northwestern regions, including the second-biggest city of St. Petersburg.
Equipment was supplied by Lucent Technologies, which delivered seven base stations and a communications center for the trial network.
“After the network is launched into commercial operation, Delta Telecom will become the first company on our market to provide a unique set of services thanks to the technologies of the future,” said Delta Telecom Director General Viktor Ustyuzhanin.
Last year, Moscow Cellular Communications (MCC) was the first NMT 450 MHz carrier to be licensed for a commercial buildout of a cdma2000 network.
