OPASTCO seeks legislation to free up spectrum in unserved areas

WASHINGTON—The Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Telecommunications Companies today said rural wireless legislation should be strengthened to free up spectrum sooner in areas not served by mobile phone operators and to limit ownership by large carriers in small businesses that bid on licenses at auctions conducted by the Federal Communications Commission.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), is expected to be addressed at a June 11 hearing before the Senate communications subcommittee.

“In our view, your efforts to promote small company access to spectrum underscores the glaring need for Congress to exercise greater oversight of the auction process,” said John Rose, president of OPASTCO, in a letter to Baucus.
