Trade groups submit critical infrastructure recommendations

WASHINGTON—Several information technology and communications sector trade associations said they have submitted input, which be included in the “President’s National Strategy for Critical Infrastructure and Cyberspace Security,” set to be published at the end of July, on how to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure to the federal government.

Together, the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, the Information Technology Association of America, the Telecommunications Industry Association and the U.S. Telecom Association drafted a plan that:

  • Outlines the critical infrastructure assurance problem and identifies steps necessary for operational continuity;
  • Puts critical infrastructure assurance into context;
  • Examines how roles are established and partnerships built;
  • Considers steps that can be taken in the future to safeguard critical infrastructure components.

“Wireless communications have become an important backbone of our nation’s emergency response and rescue systems,” said Tom Wheeler, president and chief executive officer of CTIA. “Ensuring the security of this infrastructure for citizens, for public safety and for public officials is vitally important.”

In related federal telecommunications news, a meeting of President Bush’s presidential committee on telecommunications security, headed by Joe Nacchio, chief executive officer of Qwest Communications International Inc., is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Denver. The meeting is the first in a series of town-hall meetings on wireless and cyber-security.
