M-Cell changes CEO

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—M-Cell, the holding company for South African mobile network operator MTN, announced that Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Paul Edwards has stepped down in favor of Phuthuma Nhleko, non-executive chairman.

Edwards said his appointment to the position at M-Cell had been temporary. The nature of the appointment was not announced due to what M-Cell termed sensitive issues in the market, such as the launch of the third operator in South Africa, Cell C, and the drive to establish a presence in Nigeria.

A spokesman for M-Cell said the board room reshuffle was part of the unbundling of parent company Johnnic and that the latest moves would bring an end to management changes at the company.
