Filipino businesses expected to expand wireless technology use

MANILA, The Philippines—Wireless communications will emerge as an integral part of the Filipino workplace as enterprises adopt mobile networks in their operations, according to Roger Wong, vice president for enterprise at Ericsson Telecommunications Pte. Ltd.

Wong based his optimism on the latest statistics from research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), which indicates that enterprises are currently spending 30 percent of their annual budgets on mobile-related investments. In particular, the Asia-Pacific mobile enterprise market is expected to grow at 20 percent to 30 percent every year until 2005.

However, Wong pointed out that General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which provides a more efficient platform for wirelessly transferring data, is integral to building a seamless mobile enterprise network. He added that to drive the adoption of mobile networks in the enterprise setting, there should be seamless integration between corporate and public networks.

Wong, who is based in Manila, further noted that mobile enterprise networks require platforms that can support applications at a consistent level. He said that current Bluetooth and 802.11a technologies can carry data efficiently in the personal and local area network level, respectively.
