TOKYO—KDDI, the second-largest operator in Japan, announced that it succeeded in offering what it called the world’s first experiment for a third-generation (3G) and wireless local area network (WLAN) dual system. The carrier is going to implement the dual service on a commercial basis in cooperation with other businesses, including automobile companies.
In cooperation with Cisco Systems Japan, KDDI succeeded in continuously communicating with a moving car that included 3G and WLAN devices.
WLAN provides high data speeds of up to 11 Megabits per second (Mbps); however, the service area is limited to a small area around base stations. KDDI’s 3G and WLAN dual system will expand coverage of KDDI’s 3G network and will let the service provider offer a variety of rich content.
