StarHub to push non-voice revenue during 2002 World Cup

JAKARTA, Indonesia—StarHub, Singapore’s third-largest mobile operator, said it has enriched content for its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and short message service (SMS) services with the coming of the 2002 World Cup during June (see related story on World Cup under “Features”).

During the event, StarHub’s mobile customers can be alerted about World Cup news, including a lively announcement whenever a goal is scored, games, picture downloading and other World-Cup-related services.

Chan Kin Hung, vice president of StarHub Mobile, revealed that considering many customers are soccer fans, having up to-the-minute score results is important. “That is what we offer to our customers anytime, anywhere in Singapore in real time, especially when they are working in the daytime,” he said.

The delivery of the services is in line with StarHub’s target to increase non-voice revenue from 7 percent in 2001 to 9 percent in 2002.
