Vodacom looks for growth in Democratic Republic of Congo

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—South African mobile network operator Vodacom is currently in the process of launching its cellular network in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As an indication of expected growth, the company has ordered 155,000 Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) packs, 1 million prepaid vouchers, fulfillment packs and electronic re-loads of terminals in an initial contract worth an estimated US$2 million from South African company NamITech Telecommunications.

Vodacom entered the DRC through a recent joint venture formed with Congolese Wireless Network (CWN), one of that country’s cellular network operators.

Vodacom has already predicted that business stemming from Africa within the next two years will form a major part its total group revenue stream.
