SUNNYVALE, Calif.—Good Technology Inc. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Research In Motion Ltd., alleging RIM’s single mailbox patent infringes on its newly released wireless e-mail product.
The suit, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is seen as a pre-emptive strike against RIM, which has in the past stated its intent to actively protect its patents. RIM recently ended a long-running patent dispute with Glenayre Electronics.
“Research In Motion, Ltd. (RIM) has been vocal about protecting its single mailbox patent. Good does not infringe on RIM’s single mailbox patent. We have filed this complaint for declaratory relief to ask the court to confirm that we do not infringe on this patent,” Good said in a statement.
RIM officials were not immediately available for comment.
Good recently unveiled its wireless e-mail service, which includes a wireless device with a tiny keyboard similar to RIM’s BlackBerry, and stated its intent to compete with RIM in the corporate wireless e-mail market.
