VanderMeulen to join Aether board, Wheeler to step down

OWINGS Mills, Md.—Aether Systems Inc. said Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association President Thomas Wheeler and two other board members are stepping down from the financially struggling wireless data firm and being replaced.

In addition to Wheeler, Frank Bonsal Jr. and Devin Wenig are leaving the firm. Aether also announced the nomination of four new members—James T. Brady, Jack Dunn IV, Edward Mathias and Kendra VanderMeulen—to its board of directors.
“These board changes bring fresh insights, experiences and contacts to Aether as the company continues to evolve,” said Aether Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dave Oros.

In recent years, questions have been raised about whether Wheeler’s financial and business affiliations with Aether Systems and other high-tech firms represent a conflict of interest. Wheeler claims his contract with the not-for-profit trade group allows him to pursue entrepreneurial ventures—including those with association members—on the side.
